License. Some states require a license, and some do not. Always obtain their license number and check the plumber’s credentials with the Board of State Examiners before hiring. (Most states require at least a 5 year master plumber license)

Insurance/Bonded. A good plumber will always have insurance and be bonded This protects both you and the plumber. Accidents happen and you want to make sure you have all your bases covered. Plumbers should always take a minumim of $300,000 general liability policy. If they do not have applicable coverage, reconsider.

Pricing. Always get this in writing. The contract should include time frames, cost of materials, payment arrangements, license number, and the total cost. To be safe, get a few other estimates for comparison to make sure you are getting a fair price.

Warranty. Always get this in writing as well. The coverage can range from 30 days to 5 years.  You don’t want a plumber that can’t promise you a warranty. Take note of any endorsements or awards. This will help confirm your plumber has been around for awhile and dependable.
